Daniel Hayes Born 10 December, 1973 U.S. and Cyprus Dual Citizen Profession: Oceanographer (University of Cyprus Oceanography Center) Family: Wife and 3 children (7, 4, 2 at end of 2009) Residence: Nicosia (since 2004) Coach Hayes's primary goal as coach in the triathlon academy is to encourage a friendly, supportive, fun environment for children to exercise and learn new skills. He views triathlon as a sport that can be enjoyed throughout life, especially if basic techniques are learned at an early age. Triathlon is unique because it is composed of three sports, so that each person can identify his/her own strengths which give a sense of success. At the same time, challenges always exist in at least one of the disciplines, which keeps motivation high. For coach Hayes, also an active triathlete with the Cyprus Triathlon Federation in the Nireas club, running is his strength, while swimming (learned later in life) provides motivation for improvement. He began running road races in the United States around age 14, continuing running competitively through college (Luther College, Iowa). While a graduate student at the University of Washington, he competed in cross-country, road, and track events. He qualified for and raced the USA Fall Cross Country Nationals in Boston for Club Northwest in 2000. He also raced with the Husky Racing Team at the U.W., which culminated in 2001 in the National Collegiate Road Cycling Champs. From 2001, he has increased his focus on triathlons and has enjoyed the sport and the athletes immensely. In 2002, he qualified for the U.S. National Long Course team in his age group 25-29 by a strong half-ironman performance in Oregon. He travelled to Nice, France to compete with the team in the World Age Group Long Course Championships, placing 300th in a time of 9:21 over a challenging course (4km swim/120km bike/30k run). Other notable athletic achievements include a second half-ironman (4:45), three marathons (PR 2:45), a fund-raising 500 km 25-hour solo bike ride, and numerous triathlons, duathlons, and aquathons. Overall, he has competed in multi-sport races in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, and Cyprus. For the future, coach Hayes hopes to continue to enjoy the sport of triathlon, both competing and training with friends, and in a few years, his sons and daughter!
